Most AFOs and ankle splints (ASO) are considered to be a static orthosis. As such, walking boots (ROM, pneumatic, and short leg) and ankle braces are designed to provide stability while eliminating motion. After surgery or trauma they help to protect the joint from further damage until fully healed. They can also be used to help with chronic conditions by adding additional support to soft tissue.
