Intermittent pneumatic compression devices compress and release pressure around
an extremity, usually the leg and/or foot/ankle. This non-invasive, mechanical
prophylactic pumping
action improves venous and lymphatic circulation and
enhances fibrinolytic activity to reduce the risk of early clot formation.
The stimulated circulation reduces the chance of deep venous thromboses (DVTs) and complications of venous stasis when patients are non-ambulatory after trauma, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, or other illnesses.
Pneumatic compression devices have two components - the pump and an inflatable garment. The electrical pump unit intermittently pumps air into and out of an attached single-use inflatable garment. These specialized garments are designed for maximum comfort - soft, pliable and washable and designed to prevent pinching or chafing. Each garment has a full-length zipper for ease of use. Inflatable inserts are available to increase garment circumference.
